Pyroluria is a term that describes abnormally high level of pyrroles, specifically hydroxyhemopyrrolin-2-one (HPL), which is a byproduct of hemoglobin synthesis. Pyrroles have a high affinity for certain key nutrients, notably vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) and zinc.
Pyrroles plus vitamin B6 and zinc, form complexes that are readily excreted in the urine. This leads to a depletion of these nutrients in the body because they are lost at a rate faster than they can be replenished by a regular diet.
Without adequate levels of these nutrients, a variety of symptoms may manifest, which are often attributed to pyroluria. Learn more about pyroluria here.
